Books on Writing and Grammar

Book Cover: How to Write How to Write: Advice and Reflections by Richard Rhodes. 1995. This is the book I turn to when I feel like giving up. Through his careful attention to detail and respect for all types of writing, Rhodes reminds me always to aim for high quality, and to quit waiting for lofty inspiration and start working. A Pulitzer-prize winning author, Rhodes has written newsletters, novels, history of science, travel, memoirs, and psychological studies. There seems to be nothing he won't try. Random House has several of his books in print.

Book Cover: Artist's Way The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity by Julia Cameron. 1992. Ms. Cameron is by this time more an industry than an author, with many publications and programs for writers and other artists. This is the book that raised her profile to its current high status. I found the New Age rhetoric a little off-putting at first, but many people swear by this book, so I went ahead and did the twelve week course, creativity dates, affirmations, morning pages and all. It is, indeed, helpful (although I still have to hide in the closet to repeat affirmations). Cameron helped me most by encouraging me to consider my writing (and other creative endeavors) as worthwhile activities deserving my time and attention.
